ANB Mining Ltd. is a mining consulting company offering advice relating to technical issues on projects in the mining and extractive industries.
Over the past few years, the mining consultancy industry has shifted from a corporate focus towards competency and credibility, driven by an emphasis on the authority of a ‘competent/qualified person’, who is required to be held accountable for the estimation of mineral resources, conversion of mineral resources to ore reserves and the development of a suitable “life of mine” plan, including an appropriate “technical-economic” (cost) model.
ANB Mining Ltd. has been involved in a number of commissions, including open pit iron ore in Azerbaijan, underground base metals in Kosovo, open pit copper in the Democratic Republic of Congo, underground coal in the UK, and underground and opencast coal in Russia.
Experienced Mine Management
Andy Birtles, director, founder and principal mining engineer of ANB Mining Ltd. is a chartered engineer with the Engineering Council (UK) and a professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
He has a B.Sc. (Hons) in mining engineering from Nottingham University (1982), and currently is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (FIoMMM), and is a Member of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (MSAIMM), a member of the South African Colliery Managers’ Association (MSACMA), as well several other organisations promoting coal and mining. He also holds mine management certificates of competency for the UK and South Africa. He is deemed to be a Competent Person in terms of the CRIRSCO template codes of reporting Mineral Resources and Mineral/Ore Reserves for the conversion of Coal Resources to Coal Reserves.
A Wealth of Experience
Andy is an experienced, energetic, and enthusiastic mining engineer with a range of global operational, planning, and consulting experience, predominantly in the coal mining sector. With over 35 years of experience, Andy has familiarity with most mining operational methods and the associated issues associated with such mining methods:
Surface (opencast, openpit): truck & shovel, dragline, in-pit sizing and conveying;
Underground (coal): bord and pillar (conventional and mechanised), longwall, shortwall, pillar extraction;
Underground (metalliferous): room and pillar (conventional and mechanised), stoping, cut, and fill.
Andy has also been involved in coal research and development, as well as lecturing activities at tertiary educational facilities. He is currently a board member of the Mining Technology Division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining.
